Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Marvin Gaye

Artist:Marvin Gaye

Song:Can I Get A Witness

Album:The Very Best Of Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye idolized Sam Cooke so it's not surprising that a lot of his early music was very similar to Cooke. Can I Get A Witness is a 1963 hit that takes gospel influences and themes and turns them into a pop song. Gaye was still figuring out his musical style and this Holland/Dozier/Holland classic helped establish that. Can I Get A Witness was a top 30 pop hit. Gaye was still a little conflicted. He wanted to be an R & B crooner but was under pressure from Berry Gordy to produce chart hits. He would stumble a bit after this but by 1965 was producing fabulous songs and chart hits. This 2CD comp is actually pretty good for beginners. It covers some of his earliest hits and later songs like Sexual Healing. Motown has released plenty of Marvin Gaye comps so take your pick. Here's Marvin Gaye performing Can I Get A Witness & Hitchhike on Hullabaloo in 1963.
