Artist:John Coltrane
Song:My Favorite Things
Album:The Very Best Of John Coltrane
Sax legend John Coltrane was probably best known for his recordings on Impulse but what made Coltrane attractive to Impulse was the commercial success of this recording of the Rodgers/Hammerstein standard My Favorite Things. He recorded it for Atlantic Records. This 2000 Rhino comp is a good start for beginners to become familiar with Coltrane's Atlantic recordings. I have the 8CD Heavyweight Champion box set. My Favorite Things was an album of standards recorded in Oct. 1960. He recorded them in his own style but made them very accessible to casual listeners and it made Coltrane a household name. He recorded the album with the basic Coltrane quartet that would become famous at Impulse. McCoy Tyner was on piano and Elvin Jones was on drums. Steve Davis played bass. He had just replaced Reggie Workman and would soon be replaced by Jimmy Garrison. My Favorite Things is one of John Coltrane's greatest recordings but it's on Atlantic, not Impulse. Here's John Coltrane and his quartet performing My Favorite Things Nov. 1961 in Germany.
