Artist:Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
Song:Look At The Birdie
Album:Roots & Herbs
I've talked occasionally about great jazz that wasn't released when it was recorded but then surfaced years later. Blue Note Records owner Alfred Lion did that a lot. And when the music is as good as Roots & Herbs, it makes me wonder what he was thinking. Roots & Herbs was recorded in 1961. For some reason, Lion didn't release it until 1970. It's now available on CD with added alternate takes. It's great straight ahead hard bop from Blakey with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on sax, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass. Shorter wrote all the songs. There's plenty of great Art Blakey CDs available. Any fan would enjoy Roots & Herbs. Here's Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers performing Dat Dere in 1961 with the same lineup that is on this record.
