AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Tune Weavers

Artist:The Tune Weavers
Song:Happy, Happy Birthday Baby
Album:The Golden Age of American Rock 'n' Roll Vol. 5

Happy, Happy Birthday Baby was a top five hit in 1957. It was the only chart hit for the doo wop group The Tune Weavers. But as doo wop songs go, it's pretty memorable. The Tune Weavers were a family group from Woburn, MA. Lead singer Margo Lopez and her brother tenor Gil Lopez performed together in local clubs. Margo's husband bass John Sylvia joined in 1956 and along with cousin Charlotte Davis, they were called The Tone Weavers but after they were mistakenly introduced as The Tune Weavers, they kept that name. They were spotted by local bandleader Frank Paul and he took them into the recording studio. Margo wrote Happy, Happy Birthday Baby after she broke up with her boyfriend. Gil helped her finish the song. Paul released it on his Casa Grande label. When Philadelphia DJs started to play it, Chess picked it up for national distribution on their Checker label. The record reached #5 on the pop charts and #4 on the R&B chart. The Tune Weavers went on national package tours. They released a few more singles but could not repeat the success of Happy, Happy Birthday Baby. You can get it on this Ace Records various artists CD. Ronnie Milsap topped the country charts in 1986 with his cover of Happy, Happy Birthday Baby. It's one of the more memorable one hit wonders. Charlotte was replaced by William "Bunky" Morris Jr. in 1960. The Tune Weavers continued to record until they split up in 1964. They reunited to tour the oldies circuit in the 70s until Margo's 1991 death. She even released an album in 1988. Gil Lopez died in 1998. John Sylvia and Charlotte Davis still lead The Tune Weavers. Their website works so I guess they are still active. Here's a video of Happy, Happy Birthday Baby by The Tune Weavers.
