Here's the match video of Raquel Pennington vs Irene Aldana from last night's UFC show in San Antonio. Irene is on a three fight winning streak. If she can win this fight, it will put her firmly in the top ten and maybe a title shot down the road. Raquel is probably her toughest opponent to date. But Raquel hadn't won a fight in three years. And she was seriously injured in an ATV crash. So she's not who she used to be. Well, at least if Irene wins, she can say she beat someone who once got a title shot. The fight was blah for the most part. Round one was five minutes of light sparring. Raquel seemed to have trouble finding her range. And Irene was throwing a lot of punches but not landing very much. I scored the round 10-9 for Irene. Raquel was better in round two. The round was very similar to round one but I scored it 10-9 for Raquel. In round three, Irene makes a stupid mistake that probably cost her the fight. They went to the ground and Irene goes for a heel hook which is a very low percentage submission. Unless a fighter is good at subs, a heel hook is not worth spending time on. So what Irene should have done is give up on it and stand up where she is more comfortable. Instead Raquel pounds her with hammerfists and that probably cost Irene the fight. So I scored round three 10-9 for Raquel and she won by split decision. So Irene beat herself through ineffectiveness and stupidity. How predictable. Enjoy the video.
