Artist:Debby Boone
Song:It Never Entered My Mind/In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning
Album:Reflections of Rosemary
Of course most fans are familiar with Debby Boone's 1977 smash hit You Light Up My Life. And she is the daughter of pop music legend Pat Boone. Other than this, her music career has been Contemporary Christian. But in recent years Debby has attempted to reinvent herself as a jazz singer. Since the 80s Debby has appeared in many touring stage productions. I guess the big one was as Maria in the 1990 revival of The Sound of Music. She still does regional musical theater. Debby has been married to Gabriel Ferrer since 1979. And that means Rosemary Clooney is her mother-in-law. So this 2005 album is a tribute to Rosemary Clooney. It was released on Concord. The album is produced by her long time manager Allen Sviridoff. Debby chose songs that Rosemary recorded but were not an obvious part of her repertoire. The pianist and arranger of this album is John Oddo who was leader of the Woody Herman band at the time. Bassist Chuck Berghofer is a veteran sideman who has worked with Shelly Manne and Howard Roberts. Drummer Gregg Field works a lot with WDR and other big bands. The trumpet solo is by Warren Luening from the Bob Florence Big Band. Special guests include Scott Hamilton on sax and John Pizzarelli on guitar. Debby's sisters appear on a couple of songs doing harmony. There are a couple of big band tracks. But most of the album is with the smaller band. Debby toured to support the album. So it's a decent album and worth checking out. Making it a tribute to Rosemary Clooney adds a personal touch. It's a meaningful album. Debby released the 2013 album Swing This on her own label. I haven't heard anything from that. Here's a video for It Never Entered My Mind/In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning by Debby Boone.
