Album:Barton Hollow
For a couple of years, the duo The Civil Wars looked like they were poised to become one of the hottest acts in music. They won a total of four Grammys from 2012-14. But then they split up and we haven't heard much from them since then. Based on their chemistry, I think many fans thought that Joy Williams and John Paul White must be married. But no, they met at a 2008 songwriting workshop in Nashville. Before that, Joy recorded several albums for the Contemporary Christian label Reunion. White was about to launch a solo career on Capitol. They were paired at random at this workshop to write songs for the country group Gloriana who were similar to Little Big Town. Joy says they started to click and decided to continue to write together. They called themselves The Civil Wars. Their first live performance was Apr. 7, 2009 at the French Quarter Cafe in Nashville. Joy's CCM producer Charlie Peacock was there. He started to work with them the next day. Their next live show Live At Eddie's Attic was recorded and released as a digital download on Joy's label Sensibility. One song was covered on the TV series Nashville. The song Poison & Wine appeared on an episode of Grey's Anatomy. That's when they blew up. Poison & Wine reached #4 on the iTunes chart. The Civil Wars toured and then returned to the studio to record the 2011 album Barton Hollow. Partially aided by a Tonight Show appearance, the album was certified Gold. And they got plenty of critical acclaim. And they toured with Adele. They also wrote and recorded Safe & Sound with Taylor Swift produced by T-Bone Burnett for the film The Hunger Games. And then they appeared on the Grammys. Plenty of viewers saw them for the first time. And they signed with Columbia for the 2013 album The Civil Wars. But there was trouble in paradise. A European tour was cut short due to "internal discord". They weren't getting along. After winning another Grammy, The Civil Wars announced on Aug. 5, 2014 that they were splitting up. Joy has released three albums on her own label. She also recently split with her husband and manager Nate Yetton. They have two kids. White has released two albums on his own label. He lives in Alabama with his wife and four kids. Why did they split up? Familiarity breeds contempt and there is nothing like constant touring to feed that. When the tour was cancelled, they cited "irreconcilable differences of ambition". While Joy and Peacock did interviews to promote the 2013 album The Civil Wars, White remained at home in Alabama with his family. I guess White didn't like fame. Here's the video for Barton Hollow by The Civil Wars.
