Song:Da Da Da (I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Aha Aha Aha)
Album:Triologie: The Best Of
When Da Da Da was released in 1982, it was a hit everywhere but the US. It was a top five hit in the UK. There was renewed interest in the song when it was used in a 1997 Volkswagen commercial. Trio was formed in Grobenkneten, Germany in 1979. Guitarist Gert Krawinkel was in several bands trying to make it in the music business. One of those bands Cravinkel also included Trio lead singer Stephan Remmler. Krawinkel became a teacher while playing in bands on the side. The two got together with Silberbart drummer Peter Behrens in 1979 to form Trio. A couple of demos got them a record deal with Phonogram. Their debut album was produced by legendary bassist Klaus Voorman who was once known as The Fifth Beatle. Da Da Da was written while Trio was touring Germany. It looks like they recorded a German and English version. You can get both on this comp CD. After Da Da Da was a hit in Germany, it was picked up by Phonogram in England and reached #2 on the UK Singles chart. And then it spread everywhere but the US probably because Mercury Records didn't release it until 1983. They waited too long. Da Da Da is a minimalist repetitive nonsense song. Who knows why it was a hit? Afterwards Trio had modest success in Germany before disbanding in 1986. Remmler recorded some unsuccessful solo albums and quit the music business in 1996. Krawinkel opened a recording studio. He died in 2014. After recovering from alcoholism, Behrens became a social worker. He died in 2016. There was renewed interest in Da Da Da after it was used in a 1997 Volkswagen commercial. The commercial was then parodied on the ABC sitcom Spin City. The song continues to live on through use in commercials and movies. Here's the video for Da Da Da (I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Aha Aha Aha) by Trio.
