Ben Gibbard started Death Cab for Cutie as a solo side project and expanded it to a band when he got a record deal. They had success after signing with Atlantic and they were nominated for a 2006 Grammy. Gibbard was born Aug. 11, 1976 in Bremerton, WA. While studying engineering at Western Washington University, he was guitarist for the band Pinwheel. Death Cab for Cutie started in 1997 as a home recording project. The name is a Bonzo Dog Band song that appeared in The Beatles film Magical Mystery Tour. Gibbard released a cassette that did well enough that he decided to turn Death Cab for Cutie into a band with Chris Walla on guitar, Nick Harmer on bass and Nathan Good on drums. The 1998 album Something About Airplanes got them a manager and a record deal with the indie label Barsuk. Good left while the 2000 album We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes was being recorded. He was replaced by Michael Schorr who was replaced by Jason McGerr for the 2003 album Transatlanticism. They had success with the singles The Sound of Settling and Title and Registration and songs appearing on TV shows like The O.C. and movies like Wedding Crashers. They signed with Atlantic Records for the 2005 album Plans. The single Soul Meets Body did well on the Alternative Rock chart. The album was certified Platinum. It's still their best selling album to date. It's available as a digital download. Plans was nominated for a Best Alternative Album Grammy. That was the peak of Death Cab for Cutie's success. Walla left the band in 2014. Death Cab for Cutie is still active. They released the album Thank You For Today in 2018. They are currently on a world tour. I guess they will be around as long as Gibbard wants to continue. Here's the video for Soul Meets Body by Death Cab for Cutie.
