Song:You Can't Lose What You Never Had (You Can't Spend What You Ain't Got)
Album:You're Gonna Miss Me (When I'm Dead & Gone)
The Muddy Waters Tribute Band is mostly his band that toured with Waters in the 70s until his 1983 death. This 1995 album on Telarc is the only album by this band. The man behind it was guitarist Bob Margolin who toured with Waters from 1970-83. In a 1996 interview, Margolin said they decided to reunite the band in 1991 to see if they wanted to record an album. Margolin was well aware that there are plenty of tribute albums that suck and he wanted to do this one properly. Along with Margolin, the band is Pinetop Perkins on piano, Luther "Guitar Jr" Johnson on guitar, Jerry Portnoy on harp, Calvin "Fuzz" Jones on bass and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on drums. They signed with Telarc Records. It look some time as they wanted plenty of all star guest performers including Gregg Allman, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Levon Helm, James Cotton, Koko Taylor and Peter Wolf. The band toured but they only wanted to record the one album. It's available as a budget CD. Margolin still tours and records with his own band. He will occasionally bill a show as a Muddy Waters tribute when he has appropriate guests as he does on this video. There is a Muddy Waters Tribute Band on Facebook. But that is a European group not related to this band. Here's Bob Margolin featuring Muddy Waters' son Mud Morganfield on vocals and James Cotton on harp performing You Can't Lose What You Never Had (You Can't Spend What You Ain't Got) at the 2012 Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Fest in Simi Valley, CA.
