Album:The Yngwie Malmsteen Collection
Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen is known for his neo classical heavy metal style popular with guitar nerds especially in Japan. Black Star is from his 1984 debut album Rising Force. He's a very successful touring act. He was born Lars Johan Yngwie Lannerback June 30, 1963 in the Stockholm suburb of Hasselby-Vallingby, Sweden. He started his first band at age ten. Malmsteen is his mother's maiden name. He was a big fan of classical composers like Paginini and Bach. His main guitar influence is Ritchie Blackmore. A demo got the attention of Shrapnel Records owner Mike Varney. He brought Malmsteen to the US to play guitar on Steeler's 1983 album. Malmsteen didn't like the band and joined Graham Bonnet's band Alcatrazz. After a fight with Bonnet, Malmsteen was fired and signed with Polydor for his 1984 solo debut Rising Force. This was intended to be an instrumental album but it featured vocals by Jeff Scott Soto. The rest of the band was Jens Johansson of Rainbow on keyboards and Barriemore Barlow of Jethro Tull on drums. The album was critically acclaimed and won Best Rock Album at Guitar Player magazine. Malmsteen named his band Rising Force and recorded five albums for Polydor. This comp covers those albums. After one album for Elektra, Malmsteen signed with the Japanese label Pony Canyon. More recently he has recorded for his own label and the Dutch label Mascot. As I said, Malmsteen is admired for his technical skills by other guitarists and what I call guitar nerds. His music is not affected by changes in music or the music business. So Malmsteen will continue to successfully tour and record until he retires. Here's Yngwie Malmsteen performing Black Star.
