Singer songwriter Aicha Kone is from The Ivory Coast and she sings in Senufo and Dioula. She's been recording since the 80s and most of her albums have been released in Africa and France. This 1993 album is an exception. She was born May 21, 1957 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. She was influenced by Miriam Makeba to get into music. But her doctor father was against it. Aicha was hired by RTI Television to be a choral director. She was introduced by RTI TV host Georges Tai Benson to Cameroonian music legend Manu Dibango. And he helped her record. So Aicha has been recording since the early 80s. From 1988-97 she recorded for the French label EMI Pathe. Kanawa is from the 1993 album Mandingo Live from Cote d'Ivoire. The album is not live and it was not recorded in Africa. The album was financed and released by the German label Weltmusik and it was recorded at their studio in Berlin. Weltmusik recorded World Music for the large German label WERGO in the 90s. They don't seem to be active anymore. It looks like The Alloco-Band credited on the album cover was assembled for this album led by guitarist Briscard Kouadio. He's the musical director and wrote the arrangements. Kouadio is an Ivory Coast native who is mainly a sideman. He has worked on some of Aicha's other albums. Aicha currently records for her own label. Her latest album was released in 2019 but it could be hard to find as it was only released in Africa. Here's the video for Kanawa by Aicha Kone and the Alloco-Band.
