AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Sailcat

Artist:Sailcat

Song:Motorcycle Mama

Album:Super Hits of the '70s: Have a Nice Day Vol. 8

The 1972 single Motorcycle Mama was a top 20 hit. It was the only chart single for Sailcat. So this is a one hit wonder. Sailcat recorded one album and split up. The formation of Sailcat came out of the Muscle Shoals studio scene in Alabama. That's where John Wyker and Court Pickett met. Both guys wrote songs, sang and played guitar. They had written songs for others before teaming up. A demo of Motorcycle Mama got them a record deal with Elektra. The album Motorcycle Mama was a concept album produced at Muscle Shoals by guitarist Pete Carr. Wyker and Pickett wrote and sang all the songs. But there wasn't really a band. The other instruments were played by Muscle Shoals studio musicians. Motorcycle Mama reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and then they split up. Pickett recorded the 1973 solo album Fancy Dancer. Then he quit the music business. Wyker worked as a studio musician and wrote songs for others. He died in 2013. You can get Motorcycle Mama on this Rhino various artists comp. Here's Sailcat performing Motorcycle Mama on a 1972 episode of American Bandstand. This was their only TV appearance. I wish the video quality was better.
