Tunng is a British band sometimes classified as folktronica. Never heard of it? Me neither. Tunng is a folk band that uses electronic keyboards and sampling. Folktronica has been around since the early 90s. But I can't say it is widespread or commercially successful. Mike Lindsay and Sam Genders started out composing music for soft core porn movies. They decided to turn it into a band. Though Genders was OK with recording, he didn't want to perform live. So Lindsay had to bring in musicians so Tunng could tour. This included Becky Jacobs on melodica, Ashley Bates on guitar and banjo and Dave Lewis Lloyd. Lindsay handled the electronic elements. They record for the indie label Full Time Hobby and US distribution is by Thrill Jockey. Hustle is from the 2010 album ...And Then We Saw Land. But the time this album was released, Genders left Tunng. He recorded three albums as Diagrams and returned to Tunng in 2018. By this time Tunng was also a solo act with Lindsay bringing in musicians for recording and touring. Lindsay moved to Iceland so that made things more difficult. Tunng's latest album Dead Club was released in 2020. It's based on an eight part podcast about death. They don't appear to be active right now. I guess folktronica is not a viable business though Tunng seem to be critic's darlings. Here's the video for Hustle by Tunng.
