Tribal Tech was a jazz fusion band that was formed in the 80s but had their greatest success in the 90s when they signed with a new label. Tribal Tech was formed by guitarist Scott Henderson and bassist Gary Willis in 1984. Henderson is from Florida. After studying at Florida Atlantic University, Henderson moved to Los Angeles. Willis is from Texas. After studying at The University of North Texas College of Music, he moved to Los Angeles. Both guys were working as sidemen when they decided to work together as Tribal Tech. They released their 1985 debut album Spears on Passport Jazz. The rest of the band was Bob Shepherd on sax, Pat Coil on keyboards, Steve Houghton on drums and Brad Dutz on percussion. They recorded three albums for Passport but everything got put on hold when the label went bankrupt. After Relativity took over Passport, Tribal Tech recorded a 1991 album to complete their contract. Then they signed with Bluemoon Records, a new label owned by the guys who owned Passport. They brought in Scott Kinsey on keyboards and Kirk Covington on drums. Willis knew Covington in school. They recorded three albums for Bluemoon including the 1993 album Face First. Willis wrote the song Face First but they all wrote songs. After two more albums on European labels, Tribal Tech split up in 2000. Though they reunited to record a 2012 album, all four guys have recorded as leaders and sidemen. Willis and Covington are long time friends and work together a lot. Jazz fusion fans should check out Tribal Tech. Here's Tribal Tech performing Face First in Japan, I think.
