Artist:Sunny Sweeney
Song:Bad Girl Phase
Album:Provoked
In 2010, Sunny Sweeney had a top ten country hit on a major label. It looked like she was going to be the next big thing in country music. But she left that major label and started her own label. Though Sunny is sacrificing stardom, she seems a lot happier now. She was born Dec. 7, 1976 in Houston and she grew up in Longview. After graduating high school, she moved to New York to try acting. When that didn't work out, she moved back to Texas to take music more seriously. She started playing Austin clubs and in 2005 was named by Austin Music Pundits as an act to watch. She self released her debut album Heartbreakers Hall of Fame. She signed with Big Machine and the album was re-released in 2007. In 2009, Big Machine signed a joint venture with Universal called Republic Nashville. Sunny was the first artist on that label. After the single From a Table Away reached #10 on the Country Singles chart, the album Concrete was released in 2011. But Sunny was unhappy. She has said in interviews that she felt she wasn't in control of her career. It was dictated by Republic Nashville. So she left. Her 2014 album Provoked is on her own Aunt Daddy Records with distribution from the much smaller Thirty Tigers label. She's much happier making all the decisions. The album was produced by Luke Wooten who works with Dierks Bentley. Sunny wrote most of the songs though Bad Girl Phase was written by veteran songwriters Brandy Clark, Jessie Jo Dillon and Shannon Wright. Sunny released her latest album in 2017 and a live album in 2020. She seems much happier doing things her way. Here's Sunny Sweeney performing Bad Girl Phase on Live from the Couch at ZUUS Country Studios in Nashville 2014. This video is not on Youtube.
