AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Jeremy Davenport

Artist:Jeremy Davenport

Song:I Didn't Know What Time It Was

Album:We'll Dance 'til Dawn

Jeremy Davenport plays trumpet and sings. So he will certainly remind you of Chet Baker. He was in Harry Connick Jr.'s band in the 90s. So he should remind you of Connick too. These days Davenport is a big part of the New Orleans jazz scene. He was born May 4, 1970 in St. Louis. His father was in the St. Louis Symphony for 40 years. His mother was a music teacher. Davenport studied at the Manhattan School of Music with Wynton Marsalis. Marsalis introduced Davenport to Harry Connick Jr. and that led to a move to New Orleans where he studied at the University of New Orleans and with Marsalis' dad Ellis Marsalis Jr. That led to six years on Connick's big band. Davenport made his recording debut as a leader in 1997. I Didn't Know What Time It Was is from Davenport's 2009 album We'll Dance 'til Dawn on Basin Street Records. Davenport wrote half the songs. The rest are standards like the Rodgers & Hart standard I Didn't Know What Time It Was. It was written for the 1939 musical Too Many Girls. Frank Sinatra performed it in the 1957 film Pal Joey. There are two trios on this album. On bass is either Ronald Guerin or George Porter Jr. On drums is Troy Davis or Herman T. Ernest III. Kermit Ruffin make a guest appearance. This is Davenport's latest studio album though he has released a couple of live albums. He currently has a residency at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New Orleans. Here's Jeremy Davenport performing I Didn't Know What Time It Was at the 2017 French Quarter Fest in New Orleans.
