Sax player Tom Scott is a veteran session musician and sideman. As a leader, he was a big part of establishing Smooth Jazz. He was born May 19, 1948 in Los Angeles. His father Nathan Scott composed music for TV including Dragnet and Lassie. As a teen, Scott had a band. He became a session musician in the early 70s. With his band L.A. Express, he composed the music for Starsky & Hutch and The Streets of San Francisco. L.A. Express was on Joni Mitchell's 1974 album Court and Spark and they toured with her. And he played sax on Bernard Herrmann's score for the 1976 film Taxi Driver. That's him playing the sax solo on Paul McCartney's Listen To What The Man Says. He also led the band backing up The Blues Brothers. Scott has recorded as a leader since the late 60s. Say You Love Me is from the 1987 album Streamlines for GRP Records. It was his first album for GRP and he recorded there until the label was sold in 1995. These recordings were a big part in the rise of Smooth Jazz. Musicians are Randy Kerber and Joseph Conlan on keyboards, Eric Gale and Michael Landau on guitar, Neil Stubenhaus on bass, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Michael Fisher on percussion. Scott was music director for the Emmy Award broadcast from 1996-2007. Since GRP closed, Scott hasn't recorded much as a leader. He still turns up on things like the 2018 film A Star Is Born and he was nominated for an Emmy for the 2016 TV special Tony Bennett At 90. Scott has appeared on hundreds of recordings. You have heard him even if you don't know about him. Here is Tom Scott with Francis Coletta on guitar, Joe Sample on piano, Wolfgang Schmid on bass and Alex Acuna on drums performing Say You Love Me on the German TV show Jazz In Concert in the 80s. Scott is playing a lyricon.
