Artist:The Decemberists
Song:January Hymn
Album:The King Is Dead
Fans of folk rock bands like Mumford & Sons are going to want to check out The Decemberists who have been very successful as an album and touring band since the 2011 album The King Is Dead was released on Capitol Records. The Decemberists are from Portland, OR led by singer songwriter Colin Meloy. He led the band Tarkio in his home town of Helena, MT. He left for Portland in 2000 and formed The Decemberists with bassist Nate Query and keyboard player Jenny Conlee. Pedal steel guitarist Chris Funk and drummer John Moen joined later. The Decemberists was an 1825 insurrection in Imperial Russia. Meloy also said that he wanted to invoke the "drama and melacholy" of December. After releasing an EP independently, The Decemberists released three albums. Two were on the indie label Kill Rock Stars. They signed with Capitol Records for the 2006 album The Crane Wife. They appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. January Hymn is from the 2011 album The King Is Dead. It topped the Billboard Hot 200 and the album was certified Gold. This is The Decemberists most successful album to date. After touring to support the album, The Decemberists went on hiatus. Meloy did a solo tour. He has recorded a few solo albums of oldies covers. The Decemberists returned with the 2014 album What a Terrible World, What a Wonderful World. Their latest album I'll Be Your Girl was released in 2018. The King Is Dead is available as a budget CD so you should start with that album as it is their most popular album. Folk rock fans should enjoy it. Here's Colin Meloy performing January Hymn at The Aladdin Theater in Portland May 2014. This was a fundraiser for MyMusicRx.
