Artist:The Saw Doctors
Song:To Win Just Once
Album:Sing a Powerful Song
The Saw Doctors' mix of rock and Irish musical traditions has been very successful in Ireland and England. the 1996 single To Win Just Once is their biggest chart hit but they are known for their live performances. The Saw Doctors are from Tuam, Galway, Ireland. They formed in 1986. Leo Moran had a reggae band Too Much for the White Man. Davy Carton was the guitarist for the punk band Blaze X. So they knew each other from the local club circuit. When Too Much for the White Man split up, they got together with singer Mary O'Connor and started playing local clubs. Moran and Carton write all the songs. After Mary moved to London, Moran and Carton brought in other musicians. The band membership has been fluid other than Moran and Carton. For the next few years The Saw Doctors toured especially with The Waterboys. They started their own label and released their debut album in 1991. They have scored hit singles in England and Ireland. To Win Just Once is from the 1996 album Sane Oul' Town. Band members at the time were Derek Murray on keyboards, Pearse Doherty on bass and John Donnelly on drums. To Win Just Once reached #16 on the British Singles chart. This 1997 budget comp CD is a good intro to their music. The Saw Doctors last released new music in 2010. They continued to tour until they went on hiatus in 2013. At first the break was supposed to be for a year. They toured in 2017. They have been working on new music since 2016. They say on their website a new album is scheduled for a 2020 release. I wouldn't be surprised if the album release is delayed until they can tour again. Here's the video for To Win Just Once by The Saw Doctors.
