Artist:Alvvays
Song:Atop A Cake
Album:Alvvays
The Canadian band Alvvays (pronounced Always) have been successful in Canada and in the US college market. Their music is frequently described as jangle pop. The lead singer and songwriter of Alvvays is Molly Rankin. She grew up in a musical family in Judique, NS. Her father John Morris Rankin is in the family folk music group The Rankin Family. As a child she wrote music with her neighbor Kerri MacLellan who plays keyboards. As a teen she met guitarist Alec O'Hanley. The three produced a 2010 solo album for Molly. They formed Alvvays in 2011 with bassist Brian Murphy and drummer Phil MacIsaac. Molly wanted to call the band Always but there was already a band with that name so she changed the spelling. They moved to Toronto because that's where the Canadian music business is. Atop A Cake is from their 2014 album Alvvays. It was released by Royal Mountain in Canada and Polyvinyl in the US. Molly writes all the songs usually with O'Hanley. The album topped the US College chart. They toured to support the album including an appearance at the 2015 Glastonbury festival in England. Alvvays' second album Antisocialites was released in 2017. MacIsaac left and was replaced by Sheridan Riley. Fans of jangle pop should check out Alvvays. There has been talk that Alvvays is working on a new album but there has been nothing official from the band. Here's Alvvays performing Atop A Cake at the 2015 Glastonbury festival in England.
