Artist:Crosby & Nash
Song:Immigration Man
Album:The Best of Crosby & Nash: The ABC Years
After Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) split up in 1970, David Crosby and Graham Nash released 1971 solo albums. After touring together, they decided to record an album together. And the big surprise was that Immigration Man was a top 40 pop hit. The 1972 album was called Graham Nash David Crosby. The album reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 200 and was certified Gold. Immigration Man reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nash wrote Immigration Man after he was delayed at customs at the Vancouver airport. Obviously it pissed him off. Dave Mason plays guitar on the song and Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann of The Grateful Dead all make guest appearances on the album. Crosby & Nash toured successfully and I guess it proved to them that they didn't need Stills or Young to be successful. After the 1974 CSNY reunion tour, the four attempted to record an album. When that didn't work out, Crosby & Nash signed with ABC Records. They recorded two studio and one live album for ABC. The version of Immigration Man that is on this comp CD is from the 1977 live album Crosby-Nash Live. The original version is difficult to find at a reasonable cost. After signing with Capitol Records, Crosby & Nash attempted to record an album but it was aborted when Crosby's cocaine addiction got worse and he landed in prison. They did release the 2004 album Crosby & Nash on Sanctuary and of course they toured. Nash said in 2016 that he wasn't getting along with Crosby so it was unlikely they would work together again. Here's Crosby & Nash performing Immigration Man on a 2006 episode of Later...with Jools Holland.
