AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Trio of Oz

Artist:The Trio of Oz
Song:Lost
Album:The Trio of Oz

Drummer Omar Hakim and his pianist wife Rachel Z started The Trio of Oz so they could tour together. Hakim is best known for his days with Weather Report in the 80s. Since then he has been an in demand session musician. Rachel has recorded as a leader and she was a member of Steps Ahead. Hakim was born Feb. 12, 1959 in New York City. His father played trombone and Hakim was a child when he played the drums in his dad's band. He joined Weather Report in 1982 and then he joined Dire Straits in 1985. His work on David Bowie's 1983 album Let's Dance led to his status as a top session musician. Rachel Nicolazzo was born Dec. 28, 1962 in New York City. She was a member of the late 80s band Steps Ahead. Steps Ahead leader Mike Mainieri suggested she change her name to Rachel Z. She played with Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell and especially smooth jazz sax player Najee. She first recorded as a leader in 1992. The two started The Trio of Oz in 2010 and they released the album on their own label. The bassist on the album is Maeve Royce but she was replaced by Solomon Dorsey and he is in the video. They record jazz covers of rock songs like Coldplay's Lost so they are similar to Soulive. Rachel is influenced by McCoy Tyner. The two also record and tour as The Omar Hakim Experience. And they released an EP and toured in 2019 as Ozmosys also featuring guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. I think that is their main band right now. Meanwhile Hakim continues to be an active session musician. Here's The Trio of Oz performing Lost in Koln, Germany 2010.
