Song:Easy
Album:Blue Flames: A Sun Blues Collection
Here's a 1953 single that will interest fans of legendary blues harmonica man Big Walter Horton because it's not part of his regular discography. His partner is veteran session guitarist Jimmy DeBerry. Horton established himself as a session musician for Chess Records in the early 50s. He recorded a few songs for Sun Records in 1951. He returned to Chicago to replace Junior Wells in the Muddy Waters band. Wells was drafted into the military. After the tour, Horton returned to Memphis mostly to work for Sun Records as a studio musician. His partner on this record is guitarist Jimmy DeBerry. He was also a studio musician. They had known each other for a long time as they had worked together on the radio. It's not clear how the recording of Easy came about. My guess is they were sitting around waiting for the next session at Sun Studios and started messing around. Easy is an instrumental adaptation of Ivory Joe Hunter's I Almost Lost My Mind. Sun Records owner Sam Phillips recorded it and released it as a single by Jimmy & Walter. Soon after Horton returned to Chicago to work for Chess. It's a great record and Horton fans will love it. Easy only appears on one Walter Horton comp CD. It's too expensive so the best way to get Easy is on a Sun Records various artists comp like this Rhino budget comp. Here's a video for Easy by Jimmy & Walter.
