AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Del Amitri

Artist:Del Amitri
Song:Roll To Me
Album:Collection

The Scottish band Del Amitri were successful mostly at home in England. But Roll To Me was a top ten pop hit in 1995. The song is catchy and memorable. I think most music fans have heard the song but know nothing about the band. Del Amitri was formed in 1980 out of a band that lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Justin Currie had in school in Glasgow, Scotland. When two of the original members left to go to college, Currie placed an ad in a music store. Guitarist Iain Harvie responded and he and Currie are the main guys. Other band members were interchangeable. Currie says the band was supposed to be called Dmitri but it became Del Amitri. He says the name is meaningless. Del Amitri signed with Chrysalis Records and released the 1985 album Del Amitri. For the 1989 album Waking Hours, Del Amitri moved to A&M. They brought in keyboard player Andy Alston who stayed in the band for their entire run. Nothing Ever Happens reached #11 on the British Singles chart and the album was certified Platinum in England. They continued to have success in England. But they finally scored a hit in the US when Roll To Me reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was from the 1995 album Twisted. The band did not believe Roll To Me was one of their best songs and they were irked that it was so successful. They were reluctant to play it live. The video appeared on an episode of MTV's popular show Beavis and Butt-Head and it seems that was instrumental in the song becoming a hit. Del Amitri was moved to Mercury for the 2002 album Can You Do Me Good?. The label told them if this album didn't sell, they were out. And that's what happened. Del Amitri went on hiatus. This budget comp has all their hits. Currie has recorded four solo albums. Harvie has produced Eileen Rose and The Maccabees. Alston played on Currie's solo albums. Del Amitri reunited and toured in 2013 and 2018. During that second tour, Currie and Harvie decided to record a new album as Del Amitri and tour. They have signed with Cooking Vinyl and the album is expected late in 2020. Here's the video for Roll To Me by Del Amitri.
