JEWELS held a press conference today to add three more matches to their Nov. 16 debut at Shinjuku FACE. The big news is that the incomparable Megumi Fujii (right), her teammate Hitomi Akano (left) and HIROKO have all been added to the show. Fujii & Akano were both poised to win the Smackgirl World Remix Tournament when things went bad over the summer. Fujii says they did talk to VALKYRIE but contacted JEWELS ten days ago and signed up for the debut show. Akano says she will attend the VALKYRIE show. Of course Megumi Fujii is considered by many observers to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world today. And she was a legend in Japan as an amateur sambo champ long before she turned pro. Her record is 15-0 and her most recent win was over Ham Seo Hee at the Apr. 26 Smackgirl show. Her opponent is Tomoko Morii. Morii is a pro wrestler and trains at the Kaoru Ito Professional Wrestling Classroom. This will be her MMA debut. The weight class is 58kg. That's about 6kg heavier than Fujii's normal weight class. She doesn't care about that. But she did say that she's gunning for DEEP Lightweight Champ MIKU who will make her next appearance on the Dec. 22 DEEP show against an opponent TBA.
Hitomi Akano's fight will be at 66kg and her opponent is HARI. Akano's record is 13-5 and her most recent win was over the much larger HIROKO at the Apr. 26 Smackgirl show. HARI is 5-6 and her most recent fight was a loss to Miki Morifuji at the Dec. 26 Smackgirl show. Akano won over Hari at the Jan. 8, 2005 Smackgirl show. The other match will be an open weight match with HIROKO vs Super Benkei. HIROKO is probably the largest female fighter in Japan. She's very tall. Her record is 4-1 and her first loss was to Akano. Super Benkei is the nickname of Mayumi Aoki. Her record is 2-5 and her most recent fight was a loss to Miki Morifuji at the Apr. 26 Smackgirl show. All fights are scheduled for two five minute rounds. Of course the previously announced main event is Saori Ishioka vs Mika Nagano but now the main attraction of JEWELS is Megumi "Mega Megu" Fujii. All MMA fans look forward to seeing her back in action.
