Artist:Herbie Hancock
Song:Maiden Voyage
Album:The Complete Blue Note Sixties Sessions
Herbie Hancock is another great jazz musician whose creeer is so wide ranging that you have to cover it in stages. He was a child prodigy pianist who played with the Chicago Symphony. Trumpeter Donald Byrd invited him to join his band in 1961 and Blue Note wasted no time signing him to a contract. This 5CD box set covers everything he recorded for Blue Note. Meanwhile he was also a member of the Miles Davis group from that period. 1965's Maiden Voyage is one of Hancock's best known songs and this original version features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. Carter & Williams were also in the Davis band. Herbie Hancock has gone on to have much success in mainstream music in the 80s with Rockit. So Herbie has done jazz, R & B, funk, pop and he's not slowing down anytime soon. Not surprisingly, there is no footage of Hancock's solo recordings of the 60s but he was touring with Miles Davis at the time. So here he is with Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter & Tony Williams performing My Funny Valentine in Milan in 1964.
