The Coasters are one of the most popular & enduring doo wop groups mainly because of their humour. Of course a lot of the credit for that goes to the legendary songwriting producing team of Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller. The Coasters started out in Los Angeles as The Robins. They had some success with Lieber/Stoller already but by 1953 were getting too big for their small record company to handle. Atlantic Records signed Lieber/Stoller. The Robins broke up but Bobby Nunn & Carl Gardner formed a new group called The Coasters. They added Billy Guy, Leon Hughes & guitarist Adolph Jacobs and continued to work with Lieber/Stoller. They had a hit with Down In Mexico in 1956 but Nunn & Hughes left when the group moved to New York with Lieber/Stoller. They were replaced by Will "Dub" Jones of The Cadets & Cornell Gunter. They had several hits combining doo wop with humour including Poison Ivy which seems to be about the medical condition but is probably about something else. Things petered out for The Coasters in the early 60s especially when Lieber/Stoller left Atlantic in 1963. The Coasters continue to tour the oldies concert circuit usually led by Carl Gardner.
