Artist:John Coltrane
Song:A Love Supreme, Part 1:Acknowledgement
Album:A Love Supreme
A Love Supreme is considered to be legendary sax player John Coltrane's greatest work featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. The problem is the original album is 33 minutes long. There are a couple of ways to get a little more bang for your buck. You could get the 8CD Classic John Coltrane box set. It has every studio recording ever made by those four guys. Or you could try the 2CD Deluxe Edition of A Love Supreme released by Universal in 2002. This has some real rarities on disc two. It features Coltrane, Tyner, Garrison & Jones performing A Love Supreme in its entirety at the Antibes Jazz Festival in France July 26, 1965. And here's a clip from that very concert with the guys performing Blue Waltz. It also has some previously unreleased alternate takes from the A Love Supreme sessions with Archie Shepp on sax and Art Davis on bass added to the usual quartet. I don't think these extras are available anywhere else so if you want more Coltrane, get the Deluxe Edition of A Love Supreme.
