Saturday night's Slater Bros. 300 at California Speedway in the NASCAR Busch Series gives us a good idea of what things will be like in 2007. Buschwackers, Buschwackers and more Buschwackers. I don't expect NASCAR to do anything about this because the track owners and sponsors want Nextel Cup drivers in the Busch Series. But it pretty clear that some of the independent owners are going to pack it in. There were only 41 cars entered in this race and most of them were driven by Buschwackers. A lot of them are driving part time but they're still going to dominate. Dave Blaney won the pole in his #10 ABS U-Pack Toyota. That's right, first pole for Toyota.
Dave Blaney leads the first 15 laps. Then Jeff Burton in the #29 Holiday Inn Chevy takes over. Everyone pits during a lap 28 debris caution. Kyle Busch's #5 Hendrick Autogard Chevy leads off of pit road. Eric McClure blows a tire and hits the wall in his #0 Hefty Chevy on lap 59. Jeff Burton regains the lead after pit stops followed by Matt Kenseth & Paul Menard. Then a hard crash on lap 89. Jason Leffler's #38 Great Clips Toyota is touched by Kenny Wallace. He hits the wall very hard and then Juan Pablo Montoya's #42 Texaco Havoline Dodge plows into him. Both guys were OK. Here's video of the crash along with interviews with both guys.

Most pit but Kevin Harvick's #33 RoadLoans.com Chevy stays out to lead. He did this for track position but still needed to pit. Jeff Burton gets the lead back. Paul Menard's #15 Menards Chevy blows an engine on lap 117. Mike Wallace spins out in the oil. Everyone pits to take fuel mileage out of the picture. Burton leads Matt Kenseth's #17 Dish Network Ford but Kenseth gets the lead and gets a big enough lead to hold off Casey Mears' #24 National Guard Chevy for the win. Kevin Harvick still leads the points and the Busch Series is in Mexico next week.
