Artist:Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
Song:Dancing In The Street
Album:20th Century Masters:The Millenium Colection:The Best Of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
Martha Reeves & The Vandellas had several big hits as part of the Motown music factory of the 60s. The group started out as The Del-Phis in 1960 but were unsuccessful. Martha Reeeves was working as a secretary at Motown in 1963 when she was brought in the studio to fill in for a missing Mary Wells. Rosalind Ashford & ex-Velvelette Betty Kelly were The Vandellas. The group had a string of hits all produced by the legendary production team of Holland/Dozier/Holland. Dancing In The Street was written by Marvin Gaye, Ivy Jo Hunter & Mickey Stevenson for Kim Weston but she turned it down. It topped the charts in 1964. They had several more hits and their run ended when Holland/Dozier/Holland left Motown in 1968. This budget comp is OK but The Ultimate Collection is more complete. Martha Reeves has never had much success as a solo artist but she's still touring the oldies concert circuit today. Here's Martha Reeves & The Vandellas performing Dancing In The Street on Shindig in 1966.
