Artist:Sun Kil Moon
Song:Carissa
Album:Benji
Sun Kil Moon is the current band led by singer songwriter Mark Kozalek. They tour as a band but Kozalek is the only original member. Previously, Kozalek led the band Red House Painters and he also records solo. Sun Kil Moon is named after Korean boxer Sung-Kil Moon as Kozalek is a big boxing fan. The 2002 formation of Sun Kil Moon came mostly because Kozalek wasn't getting along with Red House Painters' record label 4AD. So he decided that the best way to leave them was to dissolve Red House Painters and start a new band. Kozalek named the band after a boxer because he wanted to write songs about boxers. And he did that on their 2003 debut album Ghosts of the Great Highway. But it's impractical to limit himself so he doesn't do that anymore. The other big change was Kozalek started his own label Caido Verde. That way he can do what he wants. Carissa is from the 2014 album Benji. It was the sixth Sun Kil Moon album. It appeared on several music press Best of 2014 lists including Stereogum, Pitchfork and NME. Kozalek wrote and produced all the songs. He says the album title is because he has fond memories of watching the 1974 film Benji when he was a child. Kozalek also plays most of the instruments except for Owen Ashworth of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone on Rhodes piano and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth on drums. This album is available as a digital download. I would say that similar to Iron & Wine, Sun Kil Moon is a Mark Kozalek solo act and he forms a band to tour. They are currently on a European tour. Kozalek's solo albums usually tend to be collaborative with special guests. Here's Sun Kil Moon performing Carissa at House of Music in Hungary 2023.
