AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Leslie Pintchik

Artist:Leslie Pintchik

Song:Tumbleweed

Album:True North

Leslie Pintchik was on her way to becoming an English professor when she decided to change course and become a jazz musician. Now she plays New York City clubs with her bassist husband Scott Hardy and records for her own label. Leslie was born in Brooklyn and grew up on Long Island. Her father was a jazz fan and he played tenor sax for fun. Leslie was studying 17th century English literature at Columbia University when she started playing piano and was interested in jazz. While working as a teaching assistant, Leslie decided to become a jazz pianist. She says her major influences are Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans. Her teachers were Bruce Barth and Joanne Brackeen. Leslie got a regular gig at the Greenwich Village club Bradley's. She was already playing with husband Scott Hardy. She met bassist Red Mitchell and he played some gigs with Hardy on guitar. He encouraged her and Hardy switched to bass. They have been playing clubs as part of a trio ever since. Leslie has recorded since 2003 at first for Ambient Records. But she has recorded for her own label since 2010. Tumbleweed is from her 2016 album True North. Leslie wrote most of the songs including Tumbleweed. Along with Hardy on bass, musicians are Steve Wilson on sax, Ron Horton on trumpet, Michael Sarin on drums and Satoshi Takeishi on percussion. All are regulars on the New York jazz scene. Sarin is in Leslie's trio. Leslie released her latest album Prayer for What Remains last year with the same musicians. She mostly plays New York clubs like Kitano. Here's Leslie Pintchik with Scott Hardy and Michael Sarin performing Tumbleweed at Kitano in New York City May 23, 2018.
