AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Amina Figarova

Artist:Amina Figarova

Song:On the Go

Album:Twelve

Jazz pianist Amina Figarova was born in Azerbajian. But she has lived in the US and The Netherlands since the 80s and has recorded since the 90s. She works with flutist husband Bart Platteau and they play New York clubs and tour. She was born Dec. 3, 1964 in Baku, Azerbajian. She took piano lessons as a child and started composing at age six. She studied to be a concert pianist at the Baku Academy of Music. Then while attending the Moscow Jazz Festival, Amina was invited to study at the Rotterdam Conservatory in The Netherlands. And that's where she got interested in jazz. And then she moved to the US to study at Berklee in Boston. That's where she met Platteau and they got married. She first recorded in 1993 and signed with the Dutch label Munich Records for the 1998 album Another Me. Amina and Platteau moved to Rotterdam and they lived in The Netherlands until they moved to New York in 2010 and signed with the German label In+Out. The 2012 album Twelve was her first album for that label. The album is a tribute to New York City and Amina wrote all the songs including On the Go. Along with Platteau, musicians are Ernie Hammes on trumpet, Marc Mommaas on sax, Jeroen Vierdag on bass and Chris "Buckshot" Strik on drums. These guys are all Dutch musicians. They were Amina's touring band at the time. The album was recorded in New York and produced by In+Out's Frank Kleinschmidt. This album is available on CD. Amina now records for her own label. Last year she released the album Suite for Africa featuring the Matsiko World Orphan Choir. Here's Amina Figerova with Bart Platteau, Ernie Hammes, Jeroen Vierdag and Chris "Buckshot" Strik performing On the Go at MCG in Pittsburgh May 18,2012.
