Jazz guitarist Nelson Riveros got plenty of critical acclaim when he released the 2021 album The Latin Side of Wes Montgomery. It's only his second album. For the most part, he teaches guitar and performs in New York City clubs. He was born Sept. 26, 1964 in New York City. His parents were from Colombia. He grew up listening to their record collection including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and cumbia and salsa from Colombia. Riveros started playing guitar in high school. He studied with George Bien who turned him on to guys like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Pat Martino and Larry Carlton. After briefly attending Berklee in Boston, Riveros worked for Nile Rodgers' Sumthing Else Musicworks before returning to school. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at City College. His teachers there included Gene Bertonconi and Pete McCann. He also studied at Mannes College of Music with Remo Palmieri. Since 2005, Riveros was on the faculty of the 92nd St. Y School of Music and he performs regularly in New York clubs. For the 2021 album The Latin Side of Wes Montgomery, Riveros signed with ZOHO Music which is owned by German producer Joachim Becker who has worked with Randy Brecker and Joe Zawinul. The main musician is Hector Martignon on piano. Martignon is from Colombia and frequently works with Riveros. He's a two time Grammy nominee. Other musicians are Andy McKee on bass, Mark Walker on drums and Jonathan Gomez on percussion. All are sidemen playing New York clubs. Riveros appears to be in the recording studio working on a new album and he is now an adjunct professor at Essex County College and Bergen Community College.
