Kathy Bates is an Oscar and Emmy winning actress who currently stars in the CBS TV series Matlock. She doesn't sing but she appeared in the 1999 Wonderful World of Disney/ABC production of the Broadway musical Annie. She plays orphanage owner Miss Agatha Hannigan and sings the song Little Girls. As far as I can tell, this is Kathy's only major singing appearance. She was born June 28,1948 in Memphis. Her father was a mechanical engineer. After studying theater for a year at Southern Methodist University, Kathy moved to New York in 1970 to pursue an acting career. Most casting directors didn't think she was attractive enough. Kathy always knew she was a character actor but those roles tend to go to older actors. Probably her big breakthrough was in the 1982 Broadway production of the play Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean and she also appeared in Robert Altman's film version. Then she was Tony nominated for the 1983 drama 'night, Mother. She also had success in the 1987 play Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. Kathy was also appearing on TV so casting directors knew about her. She finally got that big film break in the 1990 film Misery based on the Stephen King book and directed by Rob Reiner. After winning the Best Actress Oscar, she's been working steadily. The 1999 TV movie Annie came about because ABC and Disney aired a very successful version of the musical Cinderella in 1997. Producers Craig Zadon and Neil Meron wanted Cinderella's choreographer Rob Marshall to direct Annie for TV. Of course Annie was a successful Broadway musical and 1982 film. Annie was played by Alicia Morton. The rest of the cast were Broadway stars like Victor Garber, Audra McDonald and Kristin Chenoweth. Kathy was better known for films at the time and I assume Disney added her for star power. The show was a success and the soundtrack is available as a digital download. Kathy has continued to work consistently. As I said, she is currently starring in the CBS TV series Matlock. Last year, The New York Times reported that Kathy planned to retire after after Matlock ends. She says she was considering retirement before the show started.
