Artist:Ronnie & the Hi-Lites
Song:I Wish That We Were Married
Album:Teenage Crush Volume 3
The 1962 single I Wish That We Were Married was a top twenty hit. It was the only chart single for the doo wop group Ronnie & the Hi-Lites. So it is a one hit wonder. They were from Jersey City, NJ. At first they were called The Cascades with tenors Sonny Caldwell and John Whitney, bass Kenny Overby and baritone Stanley Brown. Obviously influenced by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, they added 12 year old Ronnie Goodson as lead singer and changed their name to Ronnie & the Hi-Lites. They got together with local record company owner Hal Weiss and recorded I Wish That We Were Married. Weiss owned several record labels including Joy Records. He produced and arranged the records and his wife Marion Weiss wrote the songs. She wrote I Wish That We Were Married with Edna Lewis who had success with the Connie Francis hit Lipstick on Your Collar. The record reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not only was it the only hit for Ronnie & the Hi-Lites but it was the only hit for the Weisses. Ronnie & the Hi-Lites recorded several singles but none of them charted. They toured with Stevie Wonder, Major Lance and Goodson's girlfriend Little Eva. They also appeared on American Bandstand and at The Apollo. You can get I Wish That We Were Married on this Ace Records various artists budget comp. Ronnie Goodson died from a brain tumor on Nov. 4, 1980 at age 33.
