AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Elizabeth Stanley

Artist:Elizabeth Stanley

Song:Smiling

Album:Jagged Little Pill: Original Broadway Cast Recording

Elizabeth Stanley is a Broadway performer who was nominated for a Tony for playing the lead in the 2019 musical Jagged Little Pill. That's right. Alanis Morissette's 1995 album has been turned into a Broadway musical. Jukebox musicals have become really prevalent on Broadway. Most jukebox musicals are songs with no story. Jagged Little Pill is different because a story was created around the songs. Alanis says when she was approached about turning Jagged Little Pill into a musical, she wasn't sure about it until she spoke to Diablo Cody and Diane Paulus. Diablo is best known for her Oscar winning screenplay for the 2007 film Juno. Diane won a Tony for directing the 2013 revival of the musical Pippin. They brought in Tom Kitt to write arrangements for the songs from Jagged Little Pill. He won a Best Original Score Tony for the 2008 musical Next to Normal. So Alanis agreed to do it. The story is about a seemingly perfect Connecticut family with underlying problems including substance abuse. So it's not a typical jukebox musical. Elizabeth Stanley plays the mother Mary Jane Healy. She was born Dec. 19, 1978 in Cedar Rapids, IA. She attended the Indiana University School of Music as a voice major. She made her Broadway debut in a 2006 revival of Stephen Sondheim's Company. She also appeared in the 2010 jukebox musical Million Dollar Quartet and a 2014 revival of On the Town. And she was nominated for a Tony for Jagged Little Pill. She has also done TV guest shots but no films. Jagged Little Pill probably would have had a longer run but it was suspended when all Broadway theaters were closed due to COVID-19 in Mar. 2020. They resumed performances on Oct. 2021 but were forced to close permanently Dec. 2021. The original cast album won a Grammy and is available as a budget CD. Here's the video for Smiling by Alanis Morissette and Elizabeth Stanley.
