For all the roles she played in her 70 year acting career, character actress Rae Allen is best known for playing Gloria Thorpe in the Broadway musical and film Damn Yankees. She was in several musicals on Broadway but this was her only singing appearance on film. She was born Rae Julia Abruzzo July 3, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY. Her father was an opera singer and her uncles were in vaudeville. Rae trained at HB Studios and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1947. On Broadway she appeared in musicals like Call Me Madam and The Pajama Game. But her big role was in Damn Yankees especially the 1958 film version. She returned to Broadway to appear in the 1963 production of Oliver!. But she moved to Hollywood and appeared in films and TV for the rest of her career. Both the original cast and the soundtrack of Damn Yankees are available on CD but the original cast is cheaper. Rae's film appearances include The Tiger Makes Out (1967), Where's Poppa (1970), A League of Their Own (1992). On TV, she had a recurring role as Amelia DeKuyper in All in the Family and she starred in the Fox Family series The Fearing Mind. Mostly she did guest shots on shows like The Patty Duke Show, Hill Street Blues and Seinfeld. Rae Allen retired in 2011 and she died on Apr. 6, 2022 at age 95.
