Artist:Leela James f/Anthony Hamilton
Song:Say That
Album:Fall for You
Singer songwriter Leela James has had success on the R&B charts. She's a little girl with a big voice and big hair. She was born Alechia Campbell May 22, 1983 in Los Angeles. After a couple of background vocal appearances on rap tracks, she changed her name to Alechia James and sang with The Roots on the song Work from the 2000 film Bait starring Jamie Foxx. After Leela appeared on Pete Rock's 2004 single No Tears, she signed with Warner Bros. for her 2005 debut album A Change Is Gonna Come. The music is retro soul. Leela writes and produces everything with co-writers and co-producers. Raphael Saadiq was one of the producers. When album sales didn't meet Warner Bros.' expectations, Leela's contract was cancelled. Her 2009 album Let's Do It Again was a tribute to The Staple Singers on Shanachie Records. Shanachie doesn't promote. They just distribute to stores. So she signed for Concord's Stax label for the 2010 album My Soul. When that didn't work out, Leela returned to Shanachie for the 2013 album Loving You More...In the Spirit of Etta James. For the 2014 album Fall for You, Leela started her own Shesangz label with BMG distribution. The singles from that album including Say That did well on the R&B charts. As with previous albums, Leela wrote all the songs with co-writers and executive produced with Tim Kelley of Tim & Bob. Of course Say That features Anthony Hamilton. Leela wrote Say That with guitarist Darrell Crooks and keyboardist Rex Rideout who both play on the song. Rideout produces Ledisi and he produces a few songs on this album. The album did well and it's available as a digital download. Leela continues to work with Rideout on subsequent albums. Her latest is the 2023 album Thought U Knew Me. Soul fans should check her out Here's the video for Say That by Leela James featuring Anthony Hamilton.
