AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Cannonball Adderley-Bill Evans Quartet

Artist:Cannonball Adderley-Bill Evans Quartet

Song:Venice

Album:Know What I Mean?

Soprano saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and pianist Bill Evans had recorded on the same album before. But this 1961 album recorded when both guys were on Riverside Records was the only time they led a band together. Both guys left Riverside soon after so Know What I Mean? was the final time they worked together. Evans first recorded with Adderley on the 1958 album Portrait of Cannonball. This was Adderley's first album on Riverside after leaving Mercury/EmArcy. Musicians are Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Adderley's next album was his final album for EmArcy called Jump for Joy. Evans was on this album with an orchestra arranged by Bill Russo. It's a companion to the 1955 album Julian Cannonball Adderley with Strings. Adderley and Evans also appeared on the 1959 Miles Davis classic album Kind of Blue. By this time, Evans had left Adderley's band to join the Davis band and then Evans started his own band. No doubt the idea for Adderley and Evans to record as co-leaders came from Riverside producer Orrin Keepnews. I'm sure he knew that Adderley would soon leave Riverside for Capitol. The other musicians are Percy Heath on bass and Connie Kay on drums. Of course this is the rhythm section of The Modern Jazz Quartet. The album is mostly standards. Venice was written by Modern Jazz Quartet leader and pianist John Lewis. He wrote it for the score of Roger Vadim's 1956 film No Sun in Venice. A soundtrack was released on Atlantic Records. This album was released in 2019 with a new cover and several bonus tracks. The original album is also available on CD. The album is a must for Adderley and Evans fans. Here's a video for Venice by The Cannonball Adderley-Bill Evans Quartet.
