Jazz saxophonist Grant Stewart has been on the New York club scene since he was 19 years old. He was born June 4, 1971 in Toronto. His father was a part time jazz guitarist. He gave Stewart a saxophone and some transcriptions to practice. He played clubs as a teen, led his own band and had a regular gig at Toronto's C'Est What cafe. That's when he moved to New York. He has played clubs ever since. Stewart studied with Donald Byrd and Barry Harris. He made his recording debut in 1992 on the Dutch label Criss Cross. Stewart has also recorded for the Japanese label VideoArts, Marc Edelman's Sharp Nine Records and he currently records for Cellar Live owned by Vancouver based jazz saxophonist Cory Weeds. The Scene Is Clean is from Stewart's 2010 album Around the Corner on Sharp Nine. Stewart's drummer brother Phil Stewart has been in his band since 2005. Other musicians are New York City jazz scene veterans Peter Bernstein on guitar and Peter Washington on bass. Stewart does write but on this album, he's performing jazz standards including Tadd Dameron's The Scene Is Clean. Stewart's latest album The Lighting of the Lamps was released in 2022. Stewart, Eric Alexander, Vincent Herring, Harry Allen and Chris Byers are currently going into the second year of their music school Tribeca Jazz Institute.
