Artist:Karen Peck & New River
Song:Messiah Overcame
Album:Lift His Name
Karen Peck & New River is classified as Southern Gospel. But I think their sound is more contemporary than other Southern Gospel acts but not enough to alienate the faithful. Karen is from Gainesville, GA. Karen and her sisters grew up listening to gospel and their parents took them to concerts in Atlanta. One group they saw was The Lefevres who became The Nelons. Karen joined The Nelons in 1981 and performed with them for ten years. In 1991, Karen started New River with husband Rickey Gooch and sister Susan Peck. Gooch is not in the group but he is the road manager. The current version of New River is mostly family members including Kari Gooch, Matthew Gooch and Grant Gibson. Messiah Overcame is from the 2020 album Lift His Name on Daywind Records which is one of the big Southern Gospel labels. Karen Peck & New River have been very successful in this market. As I said, I think they are more contemporary than other Southern Gospel acts. But I also think they are happy where they are and I don't see them trying to cross to CCM. The fans of Southern Gospel are very loyal but they can abandon her if they aren't happy with the music. Here's Karen Peck & New River performing Messiah Overcame at the Daywind studio.
