Album Flash Forward
Jazz drummer Michael Carvin has been an in demand sideman and session musician since the early 70s. He occasionally records as a leader. Flash Forward is his latest album. He was born Dec. 12, 1944 in Houston. His father played drums in local clubs. Carvin learned to play drums at age six. And by age 12 he was playing local clubs and winning drum competitions. He was in Earl Grant's band in the 60s. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 70s to be the house drummer for Motown. He also recorded with Doug Carn, Henry Franklin and especially Jackie McLean. Carvin joined Freddie Hubbard's band in 1973 and moved to New York. Carvin recorded two albums for the Danish label Steeplechase in 1975. The first was Antiquity with Jackie Mclean. The second was The Camel with Sonny Fortune and Cecil Bridgewater. After that Carvin recorded as a sideman for Lonnie Liston Smith, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, Luther Allison, Pat Martino, Hampton Hawes, Billy Hart, Bunky Green, Reggie Workman and Dakota Staton. Carvin recorded four albums as a leader for Muse Records from 1988-94. When Muse closed, Carvin recorded and toured with violinist Billy Bang. He also gives drum clinics across the US. Carvin signed with Motema Music and formed the Michael Carvin Experience for the album Flash Forward. He records standards like Autimn Leaves with young musicians like Keith Loftis on sax, Yayoi Ikawa on piano and Jansen Cinco on bass. At age 76 Carvin is still an in demand sideman and I am sure he will record as a leader again. Here's the video for Autumn Leaves by the Michael Carvin Experience.
