Of course there are plenty of Christmas albums out there. And it can be difficult to know which ones are worth buying. And that's why I try to feature them on the blog during the holidays so you can be an educated consumer. Of course all the Motown artists recorded Christmas albums in the 60s. This 1965 album by The Supremes has become a Christmas perennial. At the time they were at the height of their fame. So it's not surprising that Motown boss Berry Gordy would want a Christmas album from The Supremes. The songs are all Christmas standards. Most of the album was produced by Harvey Fuqua of The Moonglows with arrangements by Gene Page, H.B. Barnum and Ernie Freeman. The musicians recorded in Los Angeles and The Supremes recorded the vocals in Detroit. My Favorite Things is from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. The most famous cover of the song is by jazz legend John Coltrane. As I said, Merry Christmas was released in 1965. Universal released the album on CD in 2003 with four bonus tracks. The Supremes' recording of My Favorite Things appeared in the 2018 film The Grinch which has given this album a boost on the holiday charts.
