Sax player Mark Turner has recorded as a leader since the 90s first on Warner Bros. and then on ECM. He also leads the trio Fly and he is an in demand sideman. He was born Nov. 10, 1965 in Fairborn, OH and he grew up in the Southern California town of Palos Verdes Estates. He learned to play clarinet as a child and he took up the sax as a teen. His main influences are John Coltrane and Lennie Tristano's sax player Warne Marsh. Turner studied commercial art at California State Long Beach while playing local clubs. He moved to Berklee in Boston and then moved to New York City in 1991. Turner worked at Tower Records while establishing himself on the local jazz scene. After recording with Jimmy Smith and Leon Parker, Turner made his debut as a leader with the 1995 album Yim Yam on Criss Cross. He signed with Warner Bros. in 1998 and recorded four albums. After that he went back to being a sideman. Turner formed Fly with Jeff Ballard and Larry Grenadier in 2004. They have recorded three albums for ECM. He also recorded and toured with Kurt Rosenwinkel. Brother Sister 2 is from Turner's 2014 album Lathe of Heaven on ECM. Apparently he is a big fan of Ursula K. LeGuin classic sci-fi novel Lathe of Heaven. Musicians are trumpeter Avishai Cohen, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore. Cohen is the brother of sax and clarinet player Anat Cohen. Martin has recorded with Kurt Rosenwinkel among others. Gilmore is the grandson of legendary drummer Roy Haynes. He has recorded with Vijay Iyer and with Martin has worked with guitarist Gilad Hekselman.Turner's latest album Temporary Kings was released in 2018 with pianist Ethan Everson. He continues to play local clubs and work as a sideman. Jazz fans should check him out.
