AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Mock Turtles

Artist:The Mock Turtles

Song:Can You Dig It?

Album:Best of the Bands: Classic Tracks

So you may remember seeing the video for Can You Dig It? in 1991 but you know nothing about the band. The Mock Turtles were part of the Madchester sound in England led by The Stone Roses. Can You Dig It? was a top 20 hit in England and then The Mock Turtles split up. As I said they were from Manchester, England let by lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Martin Coogan. He is the older brother of comedian Steve Coogan. Guitarist Martin Glyn Murray and drummer Steve Cowen were in the band when they were formed in 1985. Bassist Andrew Stewardson and keyboard player Joanne Gent replaced the other original members in 1989. That's the band that was on Can You Dig It?. The 1990 album Turtle Soup on Imaginary Records did well enough that the band got a deal with Virgin's Siren label for the 1991 album Two Sides. Can You Dig It? reached #16 on the British Singles chart. Coogan wrote and produced the album. They appeared on Top Of The Pops. When subsequent singles didn't do as well, Siren dropped The Mock Turtles and Coogan disbanded them to form the group Ugli. You can get Can You Dig It? on this 3CD various artists budget comp from EMI. Can You Dig It? was revived when it was used in a 2003 ad campaign for the British mobile phone company Vodaphone. A Norman Cook remix of the song was a top 20 hit in England. That must have made Coogan some easy money. Here's the video for Can You Dig It? by The Mock Turtles.
