Artist:Chad Allan and the Expressions
Song:Shakin' All Over
Album:Shakin' All Over

Most music fans should be familiar with the legendary Canadian band The Guess Who. But you may not be aware that as Chad Allan and the Expressions they topped the Canadian charts in 1965 with Shakin' All Over. Allan founded the band and he left before they became famous. He was born Allan Kowbel Mar. 28, 1943 in Winnipeg. In 1958 he formed Allan and the Silvertones. He was lead singer and guitarist with Bob Ashley on keyboards, Randy Bachman on guitar, Jim Kale on bass and Garry Peterson on drums. They changed their name to Chad Allan and the Reflections because they thought it was similar to the British group The Shadows. They signed with the Canadian label Quality Records in 1963 and they released a few singles that went nowhere. They changed their name to Chad Allan and the Expressions because there was already a group called The Reflections. That's when Shakin' All Over topped the Canadian charts. The song was written and recorded by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. It was a number one hit in England in 1960. Quality licensed it to Scepter in the US and it was released as Guess Who? so fans would think the group was British because the British Invasion was so big at the time. It reached #22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Though the real group name was revealed, DJs kept calling them Guess Who. So the band accepted the name. After two albums, Chad Allan left The Guess Who and Burton Cummings was made the new lead singer. He replaced Bob Ashley when Ashley left in 1965. You can get the early Guess Who recordings on this CD from the reissue label Sundazed. Allan hosted the CBC TV show Let's Go and he released a few singles. After Randy Bachman left The Guess Who, Allan and Bachman formed Brave Belt. Allan left after one album and of course Bachman formed Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Allan released a solo album in 1973 and he worked in TV for many years. But he will forever be known for Shakin' All Over. Here's a video for Shakin' All over by Chad Allan and the Expressions.
