Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-The Delfonics

Artist:The Delfonics
Song:Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)
Album:La-La Means I Love You: The Definitive Collection

The Delfonics were a very smooth R & B group performing what would soon be called Philly Soul. Didn't I was one of their two really big hits. The group was brothers William (born Jan. 17, 1945 in Washington, DC) and Wilbert Hart (born Oct. 19, 1947 in Philadelphia) and Randy Cain (born May 2, 1945 in Philadelphia). The other key figure in The Delfonics was legendary producer Thom Bell (born Jan. 26, 1943 in Kingston, Jamaica and grew up in Philadelphia). Cameo-Parkway producer Stan Watson introduced The Delfonics to Bell and signed them to his new Philly Groove label. At a time when the raw soul of Otis Redding & Wilson Pickett was popular, Bell brought a smoother sound usually with strings. They hit the jackpot with the 1968 hit La-La Means I Love You which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Delfonics continued to do well on the R & B charts but then struck gold again with the 1970 hit Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) which reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bell and William Hart wrote most of The Delfonics songs together. Randy Cain left The Delfonics to form the very similar group Blue Magic and was replaced by Major Harris. Thom Bell also left to produce the very similar group The Stylistics. Stan Watson took over production but The Delfonics weren't as successful without Bell. They split up in 1975 and Major Harris went on to some solo success in the mid-70s. Their songs have been covered and sampled frequently but The Delfonics really got a boost when Quentin Tarentino used their music in his 1997 film Jackie Brown. That's when Arista released this comp. The Delfonics continue to perform today and have even recorded occasionally. Here are The Delfonics performing Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) in 1970.
