Apparently The Blue Jays 1961 hit Lover's Island is considered to be the last hit record to be recorded in true doo wop style. Doo wop was pretty much dead by this time. The Blue Jays were from Los Angeles. They were led by lead singer Leon Peels (born 1936 in Newport, AR). Other members were Van Richardson, Alex Manigo & Leonard Davidson. After appearing on an amateur show at the Fox Theater in Venice, CA, they were put in touch with country singer Werly Fairburn and he signed them to his Milestone label. Milestone was mostly a rockabilly label but they had some success with the doo wop group The Paradons. Lover's Island was their first single and it reached #31 on the pop singles chart. It's a song that sounds like it could have been recorded ten years earlier. Follow up singles went nowhere and The Blue Jays had split up in 1962. Leon Peels attempted a solo career but was unsuccessful. The song is a very interesting little curio and can be found on Rhino's 4CD box set The Doo Wop Box II.
